Saving for a rainy day

Standing in Het Nutshuis you are, quite literally, standing on the history of The Hague. The parts of the foundations visible in the basement date back to the fifteenth century, so the infamous history of this place goes back as far as the birth of The Hague. The building itself was only built centuries later, in 1921, when the Haagse Nutsspaarbank opened its doors. This non-profit savings bank called on people to save for a rainy day. And their ploy worked. The sympathetic bank was soon embraced as a valuable asset in the centre of The Hague. To read more stories about the bank, go to the timeline.

We’re now living in the next chapter, when the bank premises and the building at Riviervismarkt 4 were knocked through to create one single building: Het Nutshuis. Although the savings bank closed long ago, its ideology still lives on today: it’s good to save for a rainy day. What used to be a place to keep your money is now a place to forge meaningful connections. A place for combining business with leasure.

Het Nutshuis offers eleven unique rooms, which can be hired for meetings, brainstorm sessions, parties, events and even weddings. Whether you choose the stately Commissarissenzaal, the functional Spaarkamer, the trendy Kas in the garden or the authentic Filmkluis – every room in Het Nutshuis tells a story.

Several social organisations, all of which are working hard to improve today’s and tomorrow’s world, have based their offices in Het Nutshuis. One of them is the owner and operator of Het Nutshuis: Fonds 1818, the fund that was formed when the Haagse Nutsspaarbank was sold in 1992.

“Every week, I hear visitors say things like: ‘I’ve lived in The Hague all my life, but I had no idea how beautiful it is here. It’s fantastic to see things through their eyes, and be reminded just how unique Het Nutshuis is.”
Nikki Kwee, venue rental coordinator

Sustainable and efficient

But it’s not only the residents of Het Nutshuis who are working to safeguard tomorrow’s world. The same ambition is clearly visible in the sustainable, efficient choices relating to the furnishing and upkeep of Het Nutshuis itself. The Nutshuis garden is a shining example.

The colonies of bees provide honey, Café Soof cooks with the herbs and vegetables it grows in its vegetable patch, and the wind turbine on the carpark roof and solar panels on the greenhouse and awning generate an abundance of energy.

But water also plays an important role in the Nutshuis garden. Rain and pondwater are put to optimum use. A storage tank in the basement can hold up to 40,000 litres of rainwater for watering the plants. The rainwater is collected from the roofs of surrounding buildings. In the dry summer months, a natural water source next to the pond keeps the pondwater at the right level and temperature.
